Problems and complaints, as well as neat features and things I might not know about it by looking around one for 10ish minutes.
Reason for this post is that I drove an ‘ 07 G35x (Gen 2) and loved it, so today I drove an ‘06 (Gen 1, post refresh) and thoroughly enjoyed it . I’m specifically looking at 05+ because of styling and interior quality.
Exactly like this one, but not quite as clean.

The early VQ35DE burns a lot of oil, the later the VQ, the better. Also, straight piping it results in a ban.

The only one you want is a 6mt sedan.
Unless it burns oil, then it is the last one you want.

Burns oil, look into an oil catch can and that solves it.
Solid car, otherwise solid engine.

Friend had an 06 G35 coupe and his power seats died which turned out to be pricey, so he just drove it without the power in the seats.
![]() 05/27/2019 at 22:10 |

That's a funny way to spell coupe
![]() 05/27/2019 at 22:11 |

This is one of those cars that was quite good as-is, but not perfect. SO as a used car it is a good buy if you get a deal.
BUT!
Keep in mind that the more you mod it, the worse it gets. Lower it? Great, your luxury sedan is now uncomfortable. Add power? Great, everything breaks now. Add exhaust and stereo? Great, now you’re “that guy” when you roll down the ne ighborhood and “concerned citizens” will call the cops on you for driving down their street for a slurpee. Leave it alone, and enjoy a good car.
Also, keep an eye out for oil consumption as literally everyone else who has commented on this post has said.

ARK GRiP catbacks are a must-have however.

The sedan is better - if it’s a manual.
![]() 05/27/2019 at 22:19 |

I agree, it’s not a good sounding engine. I really hate the stereotype that surrounds these cars and it’s part of the reason I kind of avoided them when I was looking for a car 2 years ago.
![]() 05/27/2019 at 22:20 |

No manuél for me, even though it’ll be paid for by me I’d like something my parents and girlfriend can drive.
![]() 05/27/2019 at 22:21 |

Nope, it’ll stay stock. I only fix what’s broken
![]() 05/27/2019 at 22:23 |

Thanks for the suggestion, I had somehow missed that problem in my quick research. What year is yours and how many miles?
![]() 05/27/2019 at 22:29 |

The sedan has better aerodynamics, rigidity, passenger room and looks. Image too if you care about that. RLI 5w40 oil basically kills oil consumption.

I don't have anything helpful to add, but they seem nice. I had an '08 G35 Coupe and had zero trouble with it. Literally the only reason I got rid of it was because it was an automatic.
![]() 05/27/2019 at 22:29 |

Going to second the power seats issue. Not too bad if they break and they’re stuck where you want them, but expensive if they’re broke where the previous owner was comfortable.

All I know about it is that Nissan took that generation of Skyline and badged it as an Infiniti.
![]() 05/27/2019 at 22:44 |

I agree completely, and thanks for the tip about the oil!
![]() 05/27/2019 at 22:45 |

I’ll definitely keep that in mind, that would be an unfortunate thing to break

Here’s my old g35.
Like someone said earlier, watch for oil consumption. Later ones are generally safe but still keep an eye on oil level. The 5 speed auto is meh, shifts slow in manual mode, gears are kind of short so it revs high at highway speeds.
Upgrading the audio can be a PITA if you have nav or Bose.
![]() 05/27/2019 at 22:58 |

What ifffff insteaddddd you got another GS300?
![]() 05/27/2019 at 22:59 |
|
Then you should enjoy a very nice car for a number of years with regular maintenance.
![]() 05/27/2019 at 23:01 |
|
It didn’t for me. It consumed oil regardless of viscosity or animal sacrifices before oil changes.
![]() 05/27/2019 at 23:02 |

Maybe they’d be better suited to a transmission that isn’t of a Latin heritage?
![]() 05/27/2019 at 23:14 |

Not just viscosity, did you use RLI?
![]() 05/27/2019 at 23:14 |

Only if it’s an 06, I’ve had a 2nd gen and want something different
![]() 05/27/2019 at 23:15 |

Perhaps!
![]() 05/27/2019 at 23:15 |

I’m used to a slow shifting 5 speed auto and the stock Bose is more than adequate for me

I wish, those are far out of budget
Also, as a side note, the 07 GS350 is faster than the 07 GS460. They tweaked the GS 350’s TCU in 08 so that it’d be slower than the V8.

“The 5 speed auto is meh, shifts slow in manual mode, gears are kind of short so it revs high at highway speeds.”
Sounds like an IS
![]() 05/27/2019 at 23:29 |

I tried cheap, expensive, heavy, and heavier. All were consumed by the Rev Up.

Mine’s a 2007 so its the updated version. Just crossed over 95k

Okie dokie, a lot of oil consumption heavy cars go down to almost no consumption using this oil. The owner patented the tech used in it, so unless you’ve used this it doesn’t really matter how much or t hick t he oil is
![]() 05/27/2019 at 23:45 |
|
A man of culture.
![]() 05/28/2019 at 00:00 |

Spot on honestly. It blows my mind that an IS gets similar MPG as an LS.
![]() 05/28/2019 at 00:34 |
|
It’s worse than that when you consider one could hypermile a series II LS400 wth VVT-i to 25 mpg — perhaps even more. You can’t get jack diddly from the 2JZ even if you drove it like it were a Prius.
![]() 05/28/2019 at 01:06 |

If I still had the car I’d try it for the sake of trying. I read everything I could about the Rev Up, nothing fixed the consumption short of a catch can that I never installed.
![]() 05/28/2019 at 01:28 |
|
Not true the first generation of the de did not burn a lot of oil the rev up is the one with the oil consumption problem
![]() 05/28/2019 at 02:01 |
|
False. I have a 2003 350Z with a VQ35DE and at 230,000 km have never burned a drop of oil, level is always bang on at my oil change intervals. The engine that like to burn oil was the VQ35 RevUp engine in the middle years, which was then fixed with the HR engine in the 07-08 years.

Its a good vehicle. The interior paint on the trim flakes off so your inside door handles , steering wheel start to look like crap.
Parts are pretty cheap, changing the oil is ea sy (I don’t have to jack up the car).
![]() 05/28/2019 at 06:44 |

If you are this far down the mental path of buying a relatively cheap, fun, RWD platform from Japan, humor me for a moment. Consider the 2003-04 Infiniti M45 (Y34). The car is loads more rare than a G35 sled, and it just oozes presenc e in person. The V8 grunt makes it no slouch.

I definitely prefer the updated version, but it’s harder finding those somewhat locally in budget. But they’re really nice cars
![]() 05/28/2019 at 08:56 |

Yeah, I’ve noticed that about the paint. On black interiors, there’s lots of contrast, but the tan hides it well.
![]() 05/28/2019 at 08:58 |

Oh it’s on my list, but with somewhere around 12,000 made, it’s very rare. But I’d rather have that, absolutely
![]() 05/28/2019 at 08:59 |

Nope, nope, and nope.
Not fun to drive, has a CVT (I have driven several and really hated all of them), and it’s too common, I want something more unique.

I have had G35x, G37, Q50. Of all of these cars my favorite was still my 2005 G35x. It has the 300zx engine, tons of power, the interior was fantastic, things like the rolling a/c vents, the power seat adjustment right near the center console so you can adjust the passenger seat from the driver's seat, the reclining rear seats. The beautiful sound from the sport exhaust. Fantastic in the snow, other than it is low to the ground. Also, the Porsche look to the front. I really miss that car...

Hmm. How much did you get it for, and what trim is it ? Genuinely curious, there’s a solid few here in nice condition by me. Might be worth checking ou t if not insanely expensive.

Great car. Clear the sunroof drains (from under the a Pillar trim) and look out for worn timing chains (it’s an expensive / long job). BUT, this car (2007 G35 RWD 5AT) slides awesome and feels long and stable . I went with a square winter set up with Blizzak ws-80 in size 215 17" all around - ditching the Journey Package’s staggered 18's . While sliding the G35 doesn’t check-up well using LFB, but it will turn in using the steering mid-slide. Long icy sweepers were great. Tons of power, the car is fast, but lacks a little torque. The HR version that I had revs higher, like 7800 rpm, but shouldn’t really. My one complaint was that I think it has a steering angle sensor that pulls throttle when you have the wheel turned in. So, turning the wheel and matting it is underwhelming. Car was good on snow, dirt, pavement. Interior was lovely. None of the other Nissan or Infiniti products that were newer were as nice. I looked at some of the big SUV Infinitis and they weren’t as lux. And the auto trans really isn’t that bad.

My brother had an 05 manual sedan. I loved / miss that car. The pedals were in the perfect position to heel/toe very easily.

Have you seen these on the Interstate whipping past people at 100+ MPH? Those are just the 2.5 models. There are probably more G sedans than V6 Altimas, too. It was hard for me to find that car.
This is gonna sound dumb, but how can you tell if a car is CVT if all you do is put the car in drive? My car is a four-speed auto, and I just put it in park, drive, and reverse. I floor it, and if it gets to speed quickly, good.
![]() 05/28/2019 at 11:28 |

It’s the way it holds the revs, whatever it decides to set it at, it stays at. So if it decides you want 4k rpm, that’s what you get. It’s not linear and natural like a traditional auto. Also, I wouldn’t mind something with better driving dynamics than an Altima.
![]() 05/28/2019 at 12:01 |
|
I * could* scare you away with a list of common problems as I work on these day in and day out. Buuuuu ut they are excellent cars and as soon as I pay off one of my loans one will replace my aging Impreza. Get the newest and lowest mileage car you can afford. Make sure maintenance is kept up to date. Be religious with oil changes. The engines are prone to sludge if you neglect it.
![]() 05/28/2019 at 12:43 |

I understand. I know Altimas are FWD and G’s are RWD, but since they’re both V6 , they seemed a bit different than a normal Altima.

Not bad. I found an ‘07 G35X in HondaBro black with 85k miles and a clean title for about $8k, gonna try and drag my parents out to take a look at it. Loved mine...until the interior trim started peeling, the sunroof drain got blocked and flooded the front floor and the dashboard melted and became soft sticky taffy...

Please tell me more. Latest model HR owner looking for tips to keep this car forever. This is my 2nd V36 and I LOVE these cars. Damn rack leaks though-- and apparently there's been a bazillion service notes to remain OEM that includes a complete overhaul of the line harness.
![]() 05/28/2019 at 20:32 |

THIS. I love the Y34 body style. Gloria designation with lines like an older President. Hard to find in low milage and good condition given the short span.

Cam sensors. Intake cam gears. Chain stretch. Blown oil galley gaskets in rear timing cover. Catalytic converters. Valve bodies. Valve cover gaskets. The odd throttle body. Chassis grounds. Seat motors. Sunroof drain grommets. BCM’ s. Trunk lid harness wiring. The odd dash harness. Oil cooler o-ring. Fuel level senders. Those are the few more common faults I see with them.

I put about 220 ,000 miles on my VQ35DE motor in my old FX35, and another 30k on my current ‘09 G37. The DE burns oil, but it’s easy to work on and will last a long time. The VHR in the G37 is a much stronger engine and I don’t burn any oil. I don’t think you can go wrong with either... look for maint records, low mileage... you know.
Great cars!
